Raccoons are nocturnal, which is exactly why most homeowners never know one’s living in the attic until the scratching starts after dark. She’s not passing through. A female raccoon looking for a den site specifically targets attics because they’re dry, insulated, and safe from predators, the same qualities that make them a good place to raise young.
How She Actually Gets In
Entry almost always traces back to one of three spots: a gap where the roofline meets the fascia, a bathroom or attic vent with a broken or missing cover, or a soffit panel that’s pulled loose from age or a prior storm. None of these require much of a gap. An adult raccoon can compress her body through an opening not much larger than her skull, so a hole that looks too small to worry about often isn’t.

Listen for timing, not just sound. Scratching that’s heaviest right at dusk and again before dawn lines up with a raccoon’s active hours, while noise that continues steadily through the middle of the day is more consistent with rats or squirrels, which changes what a technician needs to bring on the first visit.
Once she’s settled, the timeline moves faster than most people expect. Raccoons typically den to give birth between late winter and early spring in Florida, and a single litter usually runs three to five kits. What sounds like one animal scratching around at night can, within a few weeks, be a mother and several kits all living in the same insulation.
Why This Isn’t a Trap-and-Release Job
Florida wildlife law restricts how nuisance raccoons can be relocated, and a mother with kits in the attic makes DIY removal riskier, not simpler. Separating her from dependent young without knowing where they are can leave kits trapped in a wall void, which creates both an animal welfare problem and, eventually, an odor problem that’s much harder to solve than the original scratching. Confirming what’s actually up there, and whether kits are present, is the first real step, not a trap set on a guess.
Every week she stays adds up. Insulation gets flattened and soiled, which kills its effectiveness even after she’s gone, and raccoons are known to chew at wiring and vent ductwork while nesting. A single entry point rarely stays single either. Once a gap has proven usable, the same route often gets reused by whatever moves in next, whether that’s another raccoon the following season or a smaller animal like a rat squeezing through the same weak spot in the fascia.
Homes in older neighborhoods around St. Petersburg and Clearwater, where roof and soffit construction tends to be original to the house, see this kind of entry point more often than newer construction with tighter modern fascia detailing.
